Harem pants are one of the most unlikely hot Summer trends. The low crotch pants with their baggy legs almost border on the ridiculous and yet top models and celebrities have been spotted wearing them and the high street shops are full of both trendy and chic low crotch  pants. So what is the history behind them?

These rather strange looking  pants have been around for a long time and date back as long ago as the 16th century. Talitha Getty, wife of Paul Getty was also in the news in the 1960s when she was photographed wearing a very chic pair of white harem pants, on a Marrakech roof top. They were popular in the 1980´s and then again revived in the 1990s by MC Hammer, who wore them in his own unique way, during a dance video.

So what is appealing about this strange fashion and what is the best way to wear harem pants?  The pants are appealing to wear because the fullness of them makes them quite forgiving if you have a few unsightly bulges. They are also nice and cool in the hotter months and comfortable and easy to move about in.

So how to wear harem pants?  Pants fashioned from soft flowing fabrics, such as silk or jersey, can look good even on shorter ladies, because they will drape well but they do need to be worn with high heels to elongate the legs, or the effect can be balloon like. Check for the divide area and try to select a style that doesn´t have too much fabric in this area, as that can bunch up and create a pretty awful silhouette. You really are best looking for a  tailored shape.  A good tip is to team them with short fitted tops and keep the look simple. Shorty stretchy harem pants can look great worn during the day with cropped tops whilst black silk harem pants can look very sexy for evening worn with a pretty halter top and strappy sandals.
